Booted up this morning to find that the desktop icons were missing and I couldn’t right-click on the desktop.
Everything else worked and I could access the icons via Places/Desktop, but still the Desktop was bare and unclickable.
Thanks to this Ubuntu Forums thread I got it back. In my case it was enough to CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, and sign in again. (I didn’t have to use terminal and enter sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)
Not sure why it happened, but it could be Firefox 3.0.1.1. I’ve noticed that every time I open my History and leave it open, it slows the whole system to a standstill. The solution for this is to simply close the history as quickly as possible.
