Peter, this is what I meant by avoiding text: I meant text-based.
From the Ubuntu download page:
"Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer."

Hi Philip,
When you say text do you mean using the terminal? In any case all you have to do is burn the iso to a disk, pop it in the drive and a dialogue box opens and asks if you want to upgrade to 8.04. And then it does its work and half an hour later you have Heron instead of Gutsy. The main advantage is that it preserves all your files and settings. The other solution to installing new versions of Ubuntu or other linux distibutions is to create a separate partition for your home folder and tell the installer not to touch that partition during the installation.
I'm a long Linux nut, I'm afraid, but very glad yoout adventures . . .
Best

Thanks Peter, especially for the link.
I think the alternate cd involves text? I try to avoid text where possible, having had bad experiences, but I'll follow it up. I'm chuffed that you read this blog!

Download I meant, not install -- it leaves your current settings alone.
PS

Hi Philip

You could also install the alternate CD from a local server -- link below -- and once in your drive it will upgrade the system to 8.04. I tried the net upgrade but couldn't get it to work. The alternate CD method worked perfectly.
Best
Peter
