Thanks a lot! I had exactly the same problem - 12GB which seemed to have vanished - and your post solved it perfectly.

Again, thanks a great deal! It's great to liberate twelve gigabytes.

I did have, however, some other problems after the upgrade which convinced me to do a clean install (just keeping my /home directory).
With the exception of these upgrade problems I find Hardy a good distribution, only samba client is not working properly (i.e. it doesn't find windows shares).

Hmm... I've been using audacious ever since Hardy alpha 4 was released...
Before audacious pulseaudio output plugin was released there was no support for pulseaudio direct output, however I could use the Alsa one just missing the pulseaudio benefits.
When I eventually switched the audacious output plugin to pulseaudio I only had to lower the buffer size to 500 in order to have the sound stream fluent.

Peter, this is what I meant by avoiding text: I meant text-based.
From the Ubuntu download page:
"Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer."

Hi Philip,
When you say text do you mean using the terminal? In any case all you have to do is burn the iso to a disk, pop it in the drive and a dialogue box opens and asks if you want to upgrade to 8.04. And then it does its work and half an hour later you have Heron instead of Gutsy. The main advantage is that it preserves all your files and settings. The other solution to installing new versions of Ubuntu or other linux distibutions is to create a separate partition for your home folder and tell the installer not to touch that partition during the installation.
I'm a long Linux nut, I'm afraid, but very glad yoout adventures . . .
Best

Thanks Peter, especially for the link.
I think the alternate cd involves text? I try to avoid text where possible, having had bad experiences, but I'll follow it up. I'm chuffed that you read this blog!
