A handy reference for setting up Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon).
As the author suggests, there are many ways to do it, and you may want different packages, of course, but this is a nice overall guide.
This document describes how to set up an Ubuntu 7.10 “Gutsy Gibbon” desktop. The result is a fast, secure and extendable system that provides all you need for daily work and entertainment. About 23.000 packages are available in the repositories.
This howto is a practical guide without any warranty – it doesn’t cover the theoretical backgrounds. There are many ways to set up such a system – this is the way I chose.
Ubuntu 7.10 (because it was released in 10/2007) is great! It has the wobbly / transparant window effects built in.
For those with an older computer – e.g. 256MB ram or less, Pentium II 900MHz or less – try xubuntu. It’s come on in leaps and is now just as user-friendly as ubuntu.
All those with computers grinding along laden with viruses and spyware should take the plunge and install ubuntu.
And now it seems that the icing on the cake is that the New Gimp is georgeous! see http://www.gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-2.4.html
Lucky you, Aiden. My dvd drive is kaput and I can’t upgrade directly as I didn’t install Feisty. But I hope to rectify all of that soon. Can’t wait!
